Armenian Church and the Dome of the Rock

The Armenian Church of Our Lady of the Spasm built at the Via Dolorosa’s Third Station, where Jesus falls the first time under his cross.

At the background, another important religious monument, the Dome of the Rock, is a dome built at the year 691 CE. The stone over which the Muslim shrine, The Dome of the Rock, was built, is the holiest site in Judaism. According to Jewish tradition, it is the site where Abraham prepared to sacrifice his son Isaac. Jews have traditionally regarded the location of the stone as the holiest spot on Earth, the site of the Holy of Holies during the Temple Period. Muslims traditionally regarded the location of the stone as where Muhammad ascended to Heaven accompanied by the angel Gabriel.
